Class tuition is due in full on or before the first day of the class session. Make-up classes will only be offered when the instructor is unable to teach his/her class.

Members of the Library Arts Center may subtract 10% from tuition prices of all classes.

Children’s Classes

 
Drawing: Exploring Materials & Creating Masterpieces in Black & White
Instructors: Caitlin Mauser Rowe & Mary Willis

Description:
There is a lot to black and white--much more than the basic pencil and sketch book for sure! Explore new materials each week, ranging from charcoal to ink to artists pencils and more while using a variety of papers and surfaces to draw on. Each class will start with material demonstrations and guidance. Then students will be encouraged to explore the materials while undertaking a unique art project each week.

 

Children’s Holiday Etiquette

Description:
All the gift giving and family dinners surrounding the holiday season make this the best time of year for children to learn and practice modern cultural etiquette. Children will learn the etiquette surrounding gift giving and receiving. Table etiquette will be taught as well—from table setting, serving, passing, eating and conversation. This class will be taught in a fun and informative format, through instruction, games and practice. Children will be proud of their new skills and parents will certainly be proud of the ways their child’s etiquette blossoms this holiday season. Please specify any diet restrictions or food allergies when registering your child. This class will meet in the Library Arts Center Gallery.

 

Fall Harvest Fairy Extravaganza Saturday Workshops

Sign up for one or both workshops! Supervision will not be provided between sessions for children who register for both workshops; families will be asked to bring their children home for lunch during the hour between workshops.

Fall Harvest Fairy Dwellings
Instructor: Margaret Dwyer

Description:
Explore the fanciful world of fairies with artist Margaret Dwyer. Create individualized, one-of-a-kind fairy homes in the studio with an autumn harvest theme. These miniature creations will be permanent structures built so that they may be taken home at the end of the workshop. These magical and creative dwellings are sure to enchant the whole family, lend to imaginative play at home, and who knows-- they may attract real fairies!

 

Fairy Dolls & Friends

Description:
Build your own fabulous “fall” fairies with artist Margaret Dwyer. These miniature, imaginative fairies made of natural materials, artist supplies and everyday items are sure to inspire young artists. The fairies will be the perfect size to fit inside
the fairy dwellings created in the morning workshop for families who choose to register
for both classes, (but it is not necessary to take both workshops to take part in this
imaginative extravaganza).

 

Polymer Clay Weekend Workshops

Christmas Tree Ornaments with Polymer Clay
Instructor: Margaret Dwyer

Description:
Create one-of-a-kind creative Christmas tree ornaments out of colorful polymer clays. Instructor Margaret Dwyer will help students create over-the-top, colorful and unique holiday ornaments by layering, cutting, swirling, and sculpting wedges of polymer clays together. A wide array of polymer tools, ranging from rollers and cutters to pasta makers, are sure to inspire the artist within each student. Students will leave this workshop with a collection of unique and creative ornaments either for decorating their own homes for the holidays, or for giving as gifts.

 

Miniatures for dollhouses & fairy dwellings with polymer clay

Description:
Polymer clay is a great medium to work with, as it is colorful, easy to shape and sculpt into small pieces, and once baked it is hard and plastic like. It’s a great clay for artists interested in miniatures. In this class, children will work with artist Margaret Dwyer to create a wide array of miniatures for any or every room of their fairy dwelling or doll house! Create a dish set, food, vases, clocks, toys or any accessories imaginable in the studio. At the end of the workshop, students will have creatively handcrafted miniatures to bring home to redecorate their fairy dwellings or doll houses.

 

Inuit Art Study: Winter Animals

Description:
Spend some chilly winter afternoons in the warm studio learning about artists from the Arctic region. Explore the stunning stylized artwork of the Pacific Northwest. Hear the legends and symbolism attached to animals often depicted in Inuit artwork. Create your own animal portraits in this unique, bold style.

 

Knitting Group for Kids

Description:
Warm your winter afternoons in this studio group! Students with some knitting experience, alongside children who have never knitted before, will develop knitting skills and create one- of -a -kind knitted creations in this friendly group. Students will leave this class inspired, with new crafting skills, handmade knitted projects, and new studio friends, as well as a set of knitting needles to continue knitting away the rest of the winter!

 

Zentangle Workshop

Description:
Do you like to doodle? Come learn about this meditative doodle style that has “hooked” so many artists. Caitlin Mauser Rowe will teach students the basics of Zentangle, students will work on their own Zen inspired doodle drawings in a relaxed studio setting. This class is a great fit for kids who like detail, doodles and or /are interested in Zen and meditation.

 

Learn to Crochet, The Ripple Pattern: a class for child and caregivers together- great for home school families!
Instructor: Sandy Aldrich
Tuition: $5 per participant, $3 materials fee, payable to the instructor

Description:
By learning a few simple stitches, you can create a variety of lovely crotchet projects. A simple hook and some colorful fiber is all it takes to create truly unique creations. Fiber enthusiast Sandy Aldrich will teach both children and their caregivers these basics needed to create one-of-a-kind creations. Hooks, yarns and example projects will be provided. All participants will leave class with new skills and crocheted creations as well as a new way to spend creative quality time together for child and caregiver! Basket Weaving Workshop

Description:
This is a great class for young crafters looking for a new craft, and a new challenge! Learn the art of basket weaving from this duo of crafting sisters! Students will learn to weave a simple wicker basket, woven with round reed and embellished with colorful beads. Each student will leave the workshop with a variety of basket weaving skills and his or her own unique, handmade basket.

 

Artful “Upcycled” Valentines for Children

Description:
Why not try some handmade, earth-friendly valentines this year? Learn to make your own artful valentines from recycled materials, including cardboard, brown paper bags, recycled gift wrap & origami paper, and old crayons—while also giving thought to composition, texture & contrast. At the end of this two-day workshop, students will walk away with several special valentines to share with teachers, friends & family, and a collection of valentines to present to their classmates.
 

Classes for Adults

Artful Wrappings Workshop
Instructor: Fran Huot

Description:
Need a change from the typical snowmen and reindeer wrap & typical tape-bottomed bows? Learn to make beautiful and unique bows, ribbons, tags & gift toppers to make your gifts shine. Each participant will walk away with lots of ideas for artful wrappings (Fun, Rustic, Modern, & Elegant). Tuition includes all materials, and a roll of solid colored gift wrap. Bring a digital camera or camera phone to snap photos of dozens of creative wrapping ideas to remember for future projects.

 

Mosaic Making Workshop
Instructors: Mary Willis & Caitlin Mauser Rowe

Description:
Have you ever had the desire to save broken dishes, collect colorful tiles, repurpose recycled metal bits and pieces, collect sea shells and stones etc. to use as medium in artwork? Then this beginner’s workshop in mosaics may be for you. Students will learn the basics of mosaics and will create small sample mosaic squares in the studio. Bring a few dishes or bits of collections you would like to use in your mosaic, or use materials supplied in the studio. Everyone will leave the studio with an individualized mosaic sample piece, along with the inspiration and skills needed to create mosaics at home.

 

Ceramics with a Moroccan Twist for beginner and intermediate students
Instructors: Suzanne Kaegi

Description:
This class will work on hand building and wheel throwing skills and is designed for both beginner and intermediate ceramic students. Suzanne will lead the class through the basics of ceramics, but with a Moroccan twist! Students will learn about the ceramic traditions of Morocco and will be encouraged to incorporate shapes and designs into their work that are commonly found in Moroccan pottery.

 

Artful Valentine Workshop
Instructor: Fran Huot

Description:
The art of the valentine—a handwritten sentiment of love or friendship—has not been lost, even in this age of digital correspondence. Learn to make unique, handmade valentines using artful materials such as handmade paper, paints, fibers & found objects.

 

Drawing and the Sketchbook as a Key to a Successful Watercolor
Instructor: Robert O’Brien, AWS NWS
Tuition: $130
Dates/Times: Sat. & Sun., March 3 & 4, 9:30am – 4pm
Enrollment: minimum 5, maximum 10
Description:
Robert O’Brien AWS NWS will conduct a two day workshop focusing on drawing and the importance of a sketchbook in creating a successful watercolor painting with an emphasis on values. The workshop will focus on winter landscape painting. The student will learn basic principles of perspective and how to paint a “black and white” watercolor in the sketchbook using water soluble pencils and a brush. Students will then create a thumbnail value sketch using these same materials. They will then use the sketch as a guide for a watercolor painting to be done in class. A critique and class discussion will follow. This class is open to all ability levels.
Materials and sketchbook will be provided by the students. A materials list will be furnished upon request.
